Homework

By setting homework we aim to:

  • Promote characteristics such as pride in achievement, initiative and self-confidence;

  • Foster links between home and school and teachers and parents;

  • Extend the learning environment and, in this way, provide further opportunities for enjoyable and educational experiences.

Homework is a means of:

  • Practising what is learnt in class;

  • Discovering information from outside sources;

  • Preparing for new work in school.

Nature of Homework

Homework is a balance of different types of activity. As well as formal work it will include collecting, observing, recording and various exploratory activities. The duration of homework will vary according to the nature of the task set and the ability and attention span of each child. The level of difficulty relates directly to the child's ability and activities are sufficiently open-ended to allow each child to work to his/her own potential. Homework is not confined to specific subjects but embraces all curricular areas.

At KIPS we understand that children need to have opportunities to play, relax and rest after a busy day at school and feedback from parents enables us to recognise that supporting children with their homework can often cause a lot of stress and anxiety.  This is why our programme of homework prioritises key elements of learning for your child, in particular reading and the learning of tables.  As pupils progress up the school there is an expectation for homework to take a little more time and for pupils to show increasing independence as we help them prepare for post-primary settings.

Below in an overview of our homework timetable for the whole school;  it is organised in such a way as to allow parents and pupils to choose nights during the week when they can take a little more time over written assignments.  If your child is experiencing any difficulties with homework please notify their class teacher.
